What are the considerations for power outages to the BeerBotz system while it is running?

If power outages occur with regularity in your area, you may [censored]t to consider a battery backup system for the BeerBotz interface and PC. At the very least, run through the possible scenarios so you are not surprised if/when a power outage occurs.

First let's take the case of a network outage. If set to process communications the BeerBotz system is checking its emails every minute. It makes this attempt regardless of whether it is successful or not on the previous attempt. If the network comes back, the email processing should continue as usual.

Now lets consider a power outage. If both the PC and the BeerBotz interface looses power, then the data capture will not resume when the power returns. Often there is a BIOS setting in the PC that determines if the PC reboots after a power outage. Even if it reboots however the Windows OS will not restart any previously-open applications.

If the the PC is a laptop, and the battery holds until the power is restored, then the data capture may resume (if the BeerBotz interface is not damaged). You will not have data during the outage, of course. The BeerBotz app is designed to wait for a disconnected device, and resume when the device reappears. You can test this by removing and replacing the USB cable during a data capture. If the laptop battery doesn't make it through the whole power outage, then the data capture will not resume after the outage (as above).

If a battery backup is used for both the PC and the BeerBotz interface, and the the battery holds through the entire outage, then you will have data capture as normal during the outage. If the network router has a battery, and service is operational during the outage then you would even have remote access during the event.

It is important to mention also that power outages are often accompanied by large over-voltages when the power is eventually returned. These have the potential to destroy any electrical equipment that is connected.

In summary, if the electrical power is not reliable in your area, you should put some thought into the resilience of your monitoring system.
