The polar regions experience extended periods of darkness in winter due to Earth’s axial tilt. During the Arctic and Antarctic winters, the sun does not rise above the horizon for weeks or even months. This absence of sunlight means there is virtually no incoming solar radiation, leading to dramatic cooling of the land, ice, and ocean surfaces. The long winter nights and weak solar energy input are some of the most fundamental causes of polar cooling, occurring annually.
